Because Leon Rooke’s writing has always been out of the ordinary and Tony Calzetta’s imagery is, as someone once said, “verging on wacky” and also because each has been a fan of the other, it only seemed natural that a collaboration could produce something interesting and unique. And so the idea grew. It was also natural that Tony involve Dieter Grund, an artist and printmaker with whom he had a long history of collaboration; most recently producing a 20 print folio of intaglio prints called War Stories for Children and Art Stories for Adults. The original discussions between the three led to the idea of producing an artist’s book which would reverse the traditional process of the visual illustrating the written. Instead Leon would write text based on the inspiration or interpretation of Tony’s images. And then Tony and Dieter would take back the images and the texts and develop a limited edition artist’s book in some form or another. Twenty-five graphite studio sketches selected by Tony were given to Leon. Leon selected 19 of these images and wrote separate pieces for each. A hybrid form of poetry and prose is the best way to describe the result. After reading Leon’s copy, Tony suggested they once again ignore the tradition of a book with pictures and do something a little more original. In the end it was decided to focus on nine of Leon’s stories to be housed in colourful folios inside a slip case and the slip case would support a book sculpture.
