THE IDEA AND THE TWIST

It began with a simple idea. TONY CALZETTA, a visual artist, decided he would ask his friend LEON ROOKE, a writer, to collaborate on a limited edition book. The twist was that instead of the usual practice of the artist illustrating the writer’s words, they would do it the other way round.

Tony gave Leon a number of small drawings and Leon wrote texts for 19 of the ones he was particularly inspired by. After reading Leon’s texts, Tony suggested they once again ignore tradition: instead of just a book with pictures they would do something much more original.

HOW GOD TALKS IN HIS SLEEP AND OTHER FABULOUS FICTIONS

In the end they decided to focus on nine of the texts and drawings which would be housed in folios inside a slip case. Tony reworked the original drawings and combined them with Leon’s texts using different media including intaglio, woodcuts and digital printing.

In addition, one of the drawings and its text, How God Talks in His Sleep, was re-imagined as a paper sculpture and attached to the front of the slip case.

PECULIAR PRACTICES, aka THE BROADSIDES

Tony was working on the images for Fabulous Fictions with DIETER GRUND, master printer and owner of PRESSWERK EDITIONS, when one day Dieter remarked that it seemed a pity to let the 10 remaining drawings and texts "go to waste" so they decided to publish them as a separate project--a series of black and white broadsides presented in a red clam box.
