Works on Canvas
Most recently I have returned to my roots in abstraction with large scale canvases employing the visual elements I have evolved over time combining my intuitive sensibility of colour and form.
Regarding the titles of the paintings … they are not related to the imagery of the works. I develop them as a separate creation. The idea of titles for my visual art never appealed to me, my art was meant to be solely a visual experience inviting the viewer’s personal interpretation. I didn’t want to force interpretations about the work.
After completing my first painting in undergraduate school it was suggested that I consider a title, and after short contemplation I jokingly said Genesis as it was in a way the beginning. Since then the titles have evolved to become small stories in themselves and I think of them as a side art form. Art writer Kate Regan In her catalogue essay for my touring exhibition WAR STORIES FOR CHILDREN AND ART STORIES FOR ADULTS referred to the titles as “little known art factoids”. I think that is a good description of them.
