Sunday Morning

In 1999 Ann Ireland wrote a one-page story inspired by one of my photographs from the series, “Leading Ladies.” She called the story “Sunday Morning.” An exhibition featuring Ann’s story, the photograph, and 25 mixed media panels based on a deconstruction of the photograph took place in the Dennis Tourbin Gallery at the Niagara Artists Centre in St. Catharines in July 2024.

The back story: Ann Ireland and I knew each other from school in Toronto, first at Deer Park Junior High and then at Jarvis Collegiate. It was a long time ago.

After school, we went separate ways, I became a photographer and Ann became a writer. Ann published five novels: A Certain Mr. Takahashi; The Instructor; Exile; The Blue Guitar; and, Where’s Bob?

We lost track of each other, but then around 1996 or thereabouts we met up again by chance as we lived in the same neighborhood. I can’t remember exactly how it happened but at some point, I asked her if she would be interested in writing something about one or more of my photographs. She ended up choosing one of the photos from the series “Leading Ladies” and the story she wrote she called “Sunday Morning.”

The photograph was a bit weird and the story she wrote was even weirder.

Very sadly Ann Ireland died in 2018 at the age of 65.
